Import, export and back up
Getting maps in is always free. Some ways of getting them out need Pro, and each one is marked below.
Turn a pasted outline into a map
Section titled “Turn a pasted outline into a map”-
In the library, tap the import icon at the top, then Paste an outline.
-
Paste an indented list. Each level of indentation becomes a level in the map:
TripFlightsOutboundReturnHotels -
Tap Import. The new map opens.
The paste box accepts three kinds of outline:
- Indented text, as above.
- Markdown lists.
- [ ]and- [x]become checkboxes, ticked or not. - OPML, from another outliner or mind map app. Checkboxes and notes come across too.
If the outline has several top-level lines, they are placed under a new central topic called Imported outline.
Open a Smart Mind file
Section titled “Open a Smart Mind file”A .smartmind file is a complete copy of one or more maps, pictures included.
- From Files, a download or an email: tap the file and choose Smart Mind. The app asks whether to import it, and says how many maps and pictures are inside.
- From inside the app: tap the import icon, then Restore from a backup file, and pick the file.
Imported maps are always added as new maps. If a file contains a map you already have, the app asks what to do:
| Choice | Result |
|---|---|
| Import as a copy | Keeps both |
| Open the one I have | Adds nothing, and opens your existing map |
| Replace it with this file | Your map is overwritten with the file’s version |
One answer covers every matching map in the file.
Export one map
Section titled “Export one map”- Open the map and tap ⋮ → Share & export.
- Pick a format. Formats that need Pro are marked.
- Choose where the file goes in the share sheet: Files, AirDrop, email, or another app.
| For… | Choose | |
|---|---|---|
| A picture to drop into a message or slide | Image (PNG) | Free at 1×. Pro for no mark and up to 4× |
| Pasting into a document | Text outline or Share as text | Free |
| Something to print or send as a document | PDF or Print | Pro |
| Opening in a browser | HTML outline | Pro |
| Notes apps and documentation | Markdown | Pro |
| Another mind map or outliner app | OPML | Pro |
| Opening in Smart Mind on another device | Smart Mind backup | Pro |
You can also export a map from the library, without opening it: tap ⋯ on its card.
Back up everything Pro
Section titled “Back up everything Pro”- Open Settings and tap Back up everything.
- Save the
.smartmindfile somewhere other than this device: Files, a computer, or wherever else you keep backups.
The backup contains every map and every picture. Maps in the Trash are not included. To restore it, open the file as described above. It restores in full on any device, including a free copy of the app. Restoring onto a device that already has some of the maps asks what to do with them, as in the table above, and never overwrites anything unless you choose Replace.
